A Coach’s Journal

March 3, 2010

Our goal on this blog is to connect you to our young men participating on the Acrobatic performance team.  I truly believe that you as a supporter of the ministry are co- laborers with us as we seek to encourage, inspire, & motivate them to be all that God has created them to be.

As a coach/mentor and a Christ follower,  I believe I have a responsibility to be a reflection of Jesus and the values of His Kingdom.  During every practice, performance, etc, I take that responsibility seriously. Below is a snap shot of what this looks like:

  • Take   advantage of “teachable moments” – These are windows of opportunity to teach a value or principal; they are moments that are unscripted and unplanned, they happen because you are living life together. I believe that they can be the most valuable.  These are moments  I look for and must be ready for.  I will share many of them with you!
  • Hold to high expectations- While with them, I expect each young man to follow directions the first time, I expect them to give their best always,  I expect them not to complain about anything.  I have the same level of hope for them while at home, school,  and within their community.
  • Discipline- Yes this can be sometimes viewed as a bad word, but when students don’t meet the expectations they do push-ups, without  complaining or talking  back, or they will do more.  I work hard to be consistent on this.
  • Fun – We have fun, we laugh, we joke, we will take fun field tips and outings. My wife has a wonderful quote on her wall: Live, Laugh, Love!
  • Rap Session- These are times to talk about a specific lesson from the Bible or a specific topic. These are times that we pray with and for each other.
  • Responsibility -  As a  family member/team member each person is responsible to do their part;  set-up the equipment, take down the equipment, clean up the floor, keep track of your stuff, etc.  As a family member, everyone is valued and important, no matter what their role might be.
